Bubble Level Guide — How Levels Work & Phone Accuracy

"Is this level?" is the question a spirit level has answered with the same physics — a bubble seeking the highest point of a liquid — for centuries. Your phone answers it with an accelerometer measuring which way gravity pulls. Both work; both have failure modes; and both reward knowing the technique that separates a genuinely level shelf from one that merely looks level until the vase slides.

The bubble and the sensor

A spirit level is a slightly curved vial of liquid with a bubble. The vial’s curve makes the bubble sit centred only when the level itself is truly horizontal — any tilt shifts the bubble toward the raised end, because the bubble always rises to the highest point of the vial. A phone level replaces the liquid with physics: the accelerometer measures gravity’s direction against the phone’s axes, and the tilt falls out of the arithmetic. Both are relative to true gravity — which is what "level" means.

How accurate is a phone level?

Surprisingly good after calibration: typically within a fraction of a degree for tilt readouts, with two caveats. The sensor is a MEMS accelerometer — excellent but sensitive to temperature and drift, so calibrate on a known-flat surface (and re-calibrate when readings seem suspicious). And the phone’s case must contact the surface truly flat: a camera bump or edge lip tilts the whole reading. For furniture hanging, frame alignment and appliance levelling, phone accuracy is ample; for machined surfaces and construction benchmarks, a physical level with vial sensitivity marked in mm/m remains the reference class.

Technique that separates level from looks-level

  • Measure the surface, not the assumption — place the level on the actual shelf, floor or rail, not beside it.
  • Check both axes — a shelf level left-to-right can slope front-to-back; that is where objects walk off over weeks.
  • Find the high end, then shim — shims under the low end beat tightening screws into warped material.
  • Level appliances fully — a washing machine a half-degree off walks across the room on spin; front-to-back matters as much as side-to-side.
  • Re-check after fastening — the act of screwing down shifts things. Level, fix, re-verify.
