"I pay for 500 Mbps, so why does my video call stutter?" is the question that reveals the gap in how almost everyone understands internet speed. The number on your plan is bandwidth — the width of the pipe — while the quality of your call is decided by latency, jitter and packet loss — the behaviour of what travels through it. A speed test measures all of them; knowing which number answers which complaint is the entire skill.

Download and upload are throughput — how much data per second. Latency is physics-plus-routing: the time one packet takes to reach a server and return, dominated by distance (light in fibre covers ~200 km per millisecond) and by how many hops the route takes. Jitter is latency’s variance, and packet loss is exactly what it sounds like. Two connections with identical bandwidth can feel entirely different because their latency profiles differ.

How a speed test actually works

The test first measures latency with a few small round-trips. Then it opens multiple parallel connections to a nearby server and downloads as fast as possible for several seconds — the sustained rate is your download figure. Upload runs the same process in reverse. The multiple connections matter: a single TCP stream is limited by its reaction to latency, so parallelism is required to fill a fat pipe. And "nearby server" matters just as much: the test measures the path to that server, not the abstract quality of your connection.

Diagnosing your actual complaint

  • "Calls stutter" → look at jitter and loss, not bandwidth. Fixes: wired connection, router reboots, keeping heavy uploads off the call.
  • "Games lag" → latency, full stop. Fixes: Ethernet over Wi-Fi, servers closer to you, and routing you cannot fix from home.
  • "Streaming buffers" → sustained download. Fixes: check what else is eating bandwidth; test at the problem moment, not at 6 am.
  • "Pages load slowly" → often latency to far servers plus DNS, not your 500 Mbps. A fast pipe cannot outroute physics.
  • "Everything is slow at 9 pm" → contention: your ISP’s neighbourhood capacity is shared; test at odd hours to see your uncontended ceiling.

How much bandwidth you actually need

Less than marketing suggests. One 4K stream wants ~25 Mbps; a HD video call, 3–5 Mbps up; ordinary browsing is satisfied by 10–20 Mbps per person. A household of four streaming simultaneously needs roughly 100 Mbps of honest capacity — the rest of a bigger plan buys headroom for downloads, not better experience. The exceptions are upload-heavy lives: content creators streaming, people backing up to cloud storage, remote workers on video all day. For them, the historically-neglected upload number on the plan is the one to check.

Why is my internet slow even though I pay for high speed?

Because your plan buys bandwidth, not experience. Stuttering calls are usually jitter or packet loss; laggy games are latency; slow page loads are often distance and DNS; evening slowness is ISP neighbourhood congestion. What is the difference between bandwidth and latency?
